Rottnest Island is a seven-square-mile nature preserve and wildlife sanctuary off the coast of Western Australia. About half-a-million tourists visit annually. But with no cars allowed, visitors rely on bicycles–including a large fleet of belt drive rental bikes–to see the sights.

The Rottnest Express is a ferry that takes visitors to the island.  They have a fleet of 800 rental bikes equipped with Gates Carbon Drive belts that tourists can use to pedal the island’s many cycle paths. The ferry service chose to use Gates belts on their bikes because salt water and sand rust and degrade chains, raising the cost of maintaining such a large fleet. “Customers love riding the bikes,” says Craig Power, who oversees the Rottnest Express bike fleet.
